When I change "Output Audio", the app does not work and screen closes itself

Hello everyone, I have a strange problem, but I almost went crazy because of it, so please help.

I have a Realme GT5 phone running Android 13. When I go to Settings, then the “Audio” section, and then I try to change "Output", regardless of what the current choice is, and what choice I want to change to.

This also applies if the sound is coming from external speakers or a Bluetooth headset.

What happens is that immediately after the change, the screen closes itself many times in a row, and even if you try to stop or play the song or press anything within the application, the screen closes itself, then opens again, and the same thing happens again and again.

Even with the application closed, unfortunately, the device goes into shock with any other audio application running. The screen closes itself many times and opens and closes as well. The solution here is that the application must be stopped forcibly from the phone’s settings, so everything returns to normal as it was.

The big problem is, when I open the app, as soon as I play the song, I get into the same problem again. The solution here is to delete the app and re-download it.

After re-downloading, everything is normal, the default selection of audio output is "AudioTrack - Java Based Output", Of course, if I changed to any other option, I would run into the same problem I mentioned earlier.

I am very shocked and do not know what to do at all. I have been in this problem for a month, and I was hesitant to write anything to you, until I took this step.

Also for your information, I am changing the audio output to "Hi-Res Output", so that the sound coming out is loud and clear, just like the sound coming out of the official music application on the phone, and unlike the rest of the options, the sound is abnormally low.

Please help as soon as possible, I thank you very much, and I sincerely apologize.

So a fresh install works, with the device speaker output set to AudioTrack and you can hear your music. But if you try to go into, for example Settings=>Audio=>Output=>AAudio Output, and enable the 'Speaker' slider switch, the app always crashes? Do you have any other audio processing enabled on your device?

@andrewilley I really appreciate your response to me. Yes, this is what happens. When I switch the audio output to any other type, what I mentioned to you happens. In fact, I am very shocked when the screen turns off by itself and turns it on again many times. This is something unnatural.

No, I don't have any other audio processing enabled on my device.

If your device is crashing when selecting any Output method, even after a fresh install, it could be some sort of compatibility issue with your ROM. The normal Poweramp log won't help as it will be wiped when the app is killed.

If you can take a proper Android Debug Log immediately after the issue occurs, that might help track down the issue. Make sure you have Developer Options enabled, and select Android Settings=>Developer Options=>Bug Report. You'll need to wait a while for the log to be generated, and then when you see the completed notification send the resulting file to gpmaxmpz [at] gmail.com. If it's too large to email, upload it to a shareable location and email the link to Max.

@andrewilley I will explain to you in detail, if I now install the application from the store, the application works very normally, and the Audio output is at (AudioTrack - Java Based Output), but the problem is that the sound is low (unlike the volume level that comes out from the phone’s official music application, which is considered high or normal).

I will now change the audio output to (Hi-Res Output). The problem I told you will occur, and even if I change it to any other type, as long as the change is made, the problem will occur.

I will try with another phone to video recording for you explaining the problem and what is happening to the phone and the screen specifically, so that you can analyze the matter.

Now the temporary solution to the problem is to delete the application (I tried all the methods. If I close the application and open it as soon as I play the song, the problem occurs) After downloading, now the audio output (AudioTrack - Java Based Output) is working normally.

Really thanks for contacting me, I really appreciate it.

@Abduallah Khalf Hi-Res output is not guaranteed to work on all devices. If it doesn't work for you, you can try other outputs. On the recent Androids AAudio output should be more stable, but anyway, there are devices with broken AAudio output as well.

For the default settings, AudioTrack output (as well as OpenSL output) should match in volume to other players. If it doesn't match for you (on default settings, as you can always adjust preamp, and various Poweramp gains to change that), please see here:

@maxmp @maxmp

First, my phone supports Hi-Res technology as well as Dolby technology. This is a statement from Realme, and I will upload a picture to show you.

Secondly, believe me, I have tried everything, even the method you said, the sound is still low compared to the phone’s music app or any other music player (such as Apple music, Spotify, or YouTube Music). The sound will not be as loud or natural as other applications except in (Hi-Res Output Audio) only.

This is the reason that made me change the type of audio output, but unfortunately the problem occurred.

If there is a test or something I can do to prove my words, tell me about it and I will do it for you.

Finally, thank you very much for contacting me and helping me, I really appreciate it.

@andrewilley

Yes, when I choose (Hi-Res) first, the problem occurs, and when I want to change it in order to get away from this problem, the problem will not stop until I delete the application and download it again.

After downloading, if I change to any other type (not Hi-Res) no problem occurs, but the sound is low as I told @maxmp, compared to the rest of the applications and at the same specified volume level.

Special thanks for your support and effort with me.

So to clarify: Only High-Res (which is marked as experimental, and it won't work on all devices/ROMs) causes Poweramp to crash when you select it. So you actually don't know what the output level is like using this method, as it dies before you can try it.

All other Output methods do work, but in all case the volume level is lower than you experience with other apps. Does this apply to all available devices - wired headset, on-board speaker, Bluetooth, USB-DAC, etc?

Check that DVC (Direct Volume Control) is enabled in the Audio Settings menu - both via the master control and also the per-output method overrides. Also check that 'Reply Gain' is turned off, as its target level is considerably lower than digital maximum in order to allow headroom for later equalization. Also the Pre-amp gain in the Equalizer screen can be used to boost the level a little further if needed.

@andrewilley @andrewilley

No, this is not what happens andre. When I select (Hi-Res) the screen problem occurs, and I cannot deal with the application, but the sound works, even after the change, and the sound gets louder to the same degree that I hear from other applications. I am very sure of what I am saying.

Yes, this apply to all available devices (Like: Speaker, Bluetooth, USB-C) I tried all of this.

I have verified that (DVC) is activated, and that (Reply Gain) is not activated. Certainly with (Equalizer), the experience may differ, But the problem will remain, why is the sound so low at all!

Thank you again for standing with me.
