  1. There are two types of playlist.

File-based Playlists are M3U (or similar) files saved in your device's storage. You can just copy them from your old device to your new device along with your other music files and they should work fine.

Internal Playlists only exist within Poweramp's music database, and you'd need to first export them to individual M3U files for copying over. You can also use Settings=>Export Settings/Data on your old device, then copy the backup file over to your new device and use Settings=>Import Settings/Data (you can choose which items you wish to Export/Import).

  2. I'm surprised that any phone does not have at least a basic built-in file explorer (e.g. Samsung has 'My Files'). But you can sideload apps directly via a USB cable from a computer using the ADB system, with the command line "adb install file.apk". See https://www.makeuseof.com/install-apps-via-adb-android/ for full instructions. Install a file explorer first, and then you can install other apps using that locally on the phone later.

The Add to Playlist functionality has not changed dramatically since build 934 though. You clearly are getting as far as the screen where you can either select one of your existing playlists, or press '+' to create a new one (you show this in your screenshot posted on Thursday). What happens when you press '+', as you should then be prompted to give a name for the new playlist?

  3. 'Play Next' is perhaps a bit of a legacy misnomer, especially now that there are variable settings for the main 'Add to Queue' feature. It really just offers an extra 'Insert at start of Queue' feature which has the effect of playing the new songs next. It still obeys the normal Queue rules - i.e. Start playing immediately, Start after current song had finished, or start playing after current category (Album, folder, etc) has finished:

    image.png

There is an additional switch only for the Play Next button, which forces the 'Play After Current Song' mode (i.e. it ignores the above general Queue options):
    image.png

All of these enqueuing options assume Poweramp is already playing by the way, there is no feature to automatically resume playback when you add something to the Queue. You still need to press Play.

There are a couple of minor bugs with the Play Next feature that I've noted before but which still seem to be present in the current build. The same issues were fixed for 'the Add to Playlist' and 'Add to Queue' buttons, but are still present in 'Play Next':

    • If the existing Queue has not yet commenced playing, using 'Play Next' will simply intersperse the new songs alternating with the existing songs, rather than placing them all at the start of the Queue.
    • The Play Next>Shuffled option does not seem to work, songs are always added in order.

Personally, given the new flexible options available for 'Add to Playlist' and 'Add to Queue', I think it might be simpler to just remove the 'Play Next' button completely and replace it with an 'Insert at Start' mode for the Queue button (mimicking how adding to playlists works). This is really what the button already does, so it seems a bit redundant now.

  4. Very much device dependent, but when music is playing with an Always On Display you will usually just see simplified content - such as the song title/artist. On the actual Lock Screen - the one where you can swipe/etc to unlock - you should see Android's media control widget, which can vary between different devices and even Android versions. For example this is on a Samsung Galaxy A54 with OneUI 6.0, Android 14:

What you see is based on how you have got Notifications configured by the way, it's the same information that is also shown in the statusbar pull-down media panel.

are you sure this option works?

Yes it does - as long as you have some artist tags that use the Split facility anyway, and you have the Split feature activated. You obviously won't see any difference if you don't use the feature in the first place.

For example, I created a test audio file with the Artist tag set as "TestArtist A ; TestArtist B", and semicolon is one of the symbols I use for splitting multiple artists. With the 'Show Unsplit Combined Categories' option turned off, I just see the two individual artists in the Artists list:
    image.png

However with 'Show Unsplit Combined Categories' turned on, I see the two individual names plus an extra entry showing the full unsplit contents of the tag too:

  6. It means in (for example) the Artist list you will see the full unsplit artist names, rather than only being shown the individual separated names.

Thus a song like "Under Pressure" which is tagged as being by "Queen ; David Bowie" would be shown in the Artists list under the names "Queen" and also "David Bowie" as expected, but it will also have an additional entry showing the full name in the tag, i.e. "Queen ; David Bowie". Pretty niche to be honest, and it can clog up the lists terribly, but it's there if you really want it.

  7. If you purchased Poweramp from the Google Play Store you don't need an order number, just reinstall the unlocker app from the Store (you must be using the same Google account).

If you purchased from the website directly, you should have received your ID code by email to the address you used when originally purchasing. Use this in the Settings=>Already Purchased? screen.

If you have lost your ID, please contact Support so they can resend it to you. Email to poweramp.maxmzp [at] gmail.com

  8. What so you see in Poweramp itself, those views appear to be from a File Explorer app. Have you at some stage manually downloaded artwork for the Albums in question, which will override embedded images.

Try long-pressing on one of those songs in PA and see what Info/Tags shows (are all the tags correct, and is there a reference to Album Art (and what size is it). Also, try selecting Album Art from that same menu and see if it shows whether any Embedded Album  Art is an available option.

  9. Poweramp is a local file music player, it is not a Bluetooth receiver.

The only way to use Poweramp in the scenario you describe would be to use a Poweramp app installed on your phone to play the content out via Android's Bluetooth output, and use the headunit to receive that signal for listening. The headunit would act just like any other Bluetooth receiver.

Android Auto on the headunit works the same way, with the actual audio being generated by Poweramp on the remote phone (playing its local files) which can be controlled from the AA implementation on the headunit's screen (or from the phone of course, that's where the work is actually being done). If you want to play files on the phone, let Poweramp play them and AA provide the screen interface.

  10. 'Add to End' simply means that when you use the '+Playlist' button from the menu, all of the currently ticked songs will be added at the end of whatever existing playlist you choose in the next screen. Of course, if you decide to create a New playlist for the songs (using the "+" icon at the top-right of the selection screen) it makes no difference, as the new playlist will only contain those chosen songs anyway.

I don't think installing a new update via an APK file requires a re-validation of an existing saved licence, but it's probably worth waiting for input from @maxmp to confirm this first just to be safe.

  11. I've felt for ages that since "Unknown" isn't an actual album title or a real artist name, this notionally-named entry should be displayed at the very end of Category lists or Search results, like an appendix, rather than hidden away in the middle of the 'U' section between Ultravox and Vangelis. It's one of a whole list of Requests that I complied a few years ago of relatively trivial tasks that for a few hours' work could make the app a bit easier or more logical for users.

  12. Build 934 was the first release to include the new option which allowed the '+Playlist' and '>>Queue' buttons to insert the songs in a shuffled manner. This can be controlled using the 'Insert Position' option in Settings=>Library=>Queue or Settings=>Library=>Playlists. You can also change the inserting modes by long-pressing on the '+Playlist' or '>> Queue' buttons in the song selection menu.

To add the songs that you have selected into an existing playlist, just tap the playlist name in the screenshot that you included in your post. To create a new playlist for the songs to go into, tap the '+' button at the top-right of that screen and give it a name.

But if there is any way you can install a more recent build (APK files of Poweramp can be easily downloaded from the website Download page) then the functionality will be a lot more polished.

  13. They are indeed useful. You can configure the available buttons using PA Settings=>Misc=>Buttons. The main three (Play/Pause, Next and Previous) are pre-defined by Android Auto, but the outer two can be configured how you want them (including support for four more buttons using the AA buttons 'overflow' item). Note: due to the way Android works, the chosen extra buttons will be the same across Statusbar Notifications, Watch screens, Android Auto, etc.

Depending on your car, you may also be able to simply double-press on the steering wheel's + and -  buttons to change Category.

  14. @Ricobico Any EQ adjustments will stay in place without having to press Save at all.

Any changes you make will remain current until either you change them again, or some previoualy saved/assigned Preset (song, album, output device, etc) overrides them.

So when a new song starts playing, Poweramp will check to see if there are any assigned Presets that it should apply. As far as I know, they are prioritised in this order, and the first matched entry will be used:

    1. Specific Preset assigned for the current song.
    2. Specific Preset for the current playback category - e.g. matching the current album/folder/genre/etc.
    3. Specific Preset for a named output device - such as a named USB DAC product, or one particular Bluetooth device.
    4. General Preset for the output method in use - such as an overall setting to be used for the Phone Speaker, all Wired Headsets, all Bluetooth devices, all DACs, etc.
    5. If none of the above apply, continue using the existing settings from the last song. That could have been a manual adjustment by the user, or could have previously been read from a Preset using the above process.

    (1) and (2) would be used to correct what you consider to be specific badly mastered audio content. (3) and (4) are the more common usage for a player/amplifier EQ, which is to rebalance for the quirks of your local hardware/speakers/headset/etc in order to create more accurate audio reproduction, or just for your personal preference in music listening (you may like less bass and more midrange for vocals for example).

  15. @brooks Did you actually try the feature added in recent test builds? Currently build 981 supports ignoring spurious BT commands for up to 10 seconds after connection, and that range will be increased to 20 seconds in the next build.

Also, do you have any other app which creates the same command installed - e.g. the stand-alone Poweramp Equalizer app can also detect BT connections and issue play commands accordingly.

    Andre

  16. Pressing Save/Assign and not ticking any of the boxes will Save a Preset under your chosen name, but not do the 'Assign' part. So it just creates a named Preset that you can select from the list at will. Does what it says on the tin basically.

By "additive" I mean that only one EQ setting can be applied at any given time. Let's say your car headunit happens to be horribly bass-heavy so you create a Preset for its Bluetooth connection to lower the bass significantly. If you then play a song which has its own individually assigned Preset, which perhaps asks for just the treble to be lowered, then that's what you'll get. That one song's high-end reduction won't be combined with the necessary bass-reducing adjustments required to balance the headunit's output.
