Detail should not be impacted by reducing the preamp, just the overall output level. This is helpful if you are using extreme dynamic ranges on your EQ settings. If you aren't adding too much EQ boost, I would leave it set to 0dB as that is ideal. Boosting the levels above 0dB isn't recommended unless you don't have any EQ boost, or have most of your music intentionally recorded at lower than usual levels (i.e. direct transfers from a vinyl source with low cartridge output).
