It means that the quoted strings will always be treated as a single Artist entity, even if they contain a character normally used to separate multiple artists.

Thus if you use the "/" symbol to separate different artists who perform on the same song (e.g. Under Pressure could be listed as being by "David Bowie/Queen") then band names which are meant to contain the "/" character, such as AC/DC, will remain unseparated as one name instead of being listed as a duet between the bands, AC and DC.
