Shuffle Albums

Recommended Posts

It would be excellent if Poweramp could shuffle albums instead of songs. I have a lot of concept albums and albums that are broken into parts that really don't make sense to shuffle individually. I put them all in one playlist, so I can find them, but it would be nice to shuffle them by album rather than by song.

You can't Shuffle a playlist by album, as it doesn't contain albums, just a list of songs in a planned sequence.

You can Shuffle Albums but keep their contained song's in order though, by starting playback of an Album and setting the Shuffle mode to 'Shuffle Categories'. That way, albums will be chosen at random but the individual tracks will be played in order.

Yeah, my intent was to shuffle albums in a specific playlist, rather than all of them on the device. So I hope that's still a valid request here, as I don't think that specific thing is possible. While I recognize a playlist doesn't contain albums, the songs on that playlist are in an order, and do have albums in their metadata. So I figured it would be possible at least to do this on a playlist level, too.

Not really, as Playlists don't have any hierarchy at all, they are just a long text list of songs that you added (technically actually it just contains filenames, not even "songs" as such). There is no guarantee of any particular sequential order which PA could use to process anything as a category - such as an "album" or "folder", etc. Even if you re-sorted such a list based on album tags, you could have moved a song up or down the list two minutes later. It's just considered to be an unsorted list of filenames.

This is also something that could possibly be included as part of any future Smart Playlist feature, although that request is really more targeted at being able to create dynamic lists rather than category-based handling of playlists (which as mentioned above, are not natively aware of tags or categories).
