Can someone please confirm if the Archos Hard drive Issue Will Ever Be Fixed?

Hi,

As the title asks, can someone please confirm if the problem with stuttering will ever be fixed for Archos Hard Drive Players?

I have the G9 250 Archos & because the hard disk takes some time to spin it causes a stutter as the biggest cache that can be selected is 750ms. I have other players that are not so feature rich & they have 10-20 second buffers which work perfectly. I would like to buy Poweramp as it has everything I need (apart from the stuttering!) I would just like to know if this is ever going to happen or if I have to buy another player....

Many Thanks For Your Time...

Unfortunately, Archos is not going to fix it. Here are some quotes from our conversation with Archos:

.....

Your question about the device power has been forwarded to our engineers, but sadly there is no solution.

If you have any question, please feel free to contact me. I would be very glad to help you.

Samantha,

....

the problem with hdd sleeping on Archos 70 though makes PowerAMP unusable on it.

Thanks!

Best regards,

Max.

Thank you for your reply!

I just wanted to underline that the HDD version of the 70 represents only 30% of the sales of 70 IT tablets, so PowerAMP can be usable on 70% of the 70 IT.

Although I experienced the same problems and found Poweramp unuseable, I have retested the latest release Poweramp v2.0.5-build-488 and found that it hardly stops now.

I have installed VTL.Launcher which improves the performance of the Archos 70 considerably which may be a reason for Poweramp working better.

I have now purchased the full version.

Some points to consider perhaps, I have stopped using AVG antivirus as this needed too much processing. It was also disrupting the multimedia updating of the stock player. As long as you do not download from unknown sources then a AV tool is unnecessary in my view.

I also found that setting the orientation to either landscape or portrait did cause an interruption in Poweramp even though the display did not switch. I have set this back to auto and no longer does it stop.

As I use my Archos mainly as a music player whilst travelling, I kill most processes as I do not need them. Internet connection is also off.

I now hope this performance persists as I agree with all the others, there is no better player available.

Some 3rd party players just play tracks though system media player. Those won't have issues as system media player has special HDD WakeLock on Archos HDD. We tried to use this WakeLock, but it was specifically developed by Archos in such way that prohibits WakeLock use from 3rd party apps, sorry.

My joy was shortlived. :) After having tested Poweramp for 2 days with very few interruptions, I bought the unlocker. Suddenly it is back to its old tricks!!!

This is wat Catlog shows and what maxmp refers to above:

I guess I will keep trying to experiment. What I do not understand is that it behaved fine for a while. Suddenly it has gone off again...

ps. I understand the problem maxmp has as Archos are not that interested in a small group of people who have bought the HD version.

I have done some more investigation and found that the NetLinkEvent probably the cause is of the interruptions. It consistently appears before and after each series of underrun messages. eg:

E/NetlinkEvent( 1265): NetlinkEvent::FindParam(): Parameter 'INTERFACE' not found

I/Vold ( 1265): handleUsbEvent(): Missing property, ignoring event

D/Vold ( 1265): handleUsbDeviceEvent action 2

D/Vold ( 1265): handleUsbDeviceEvent rem 152d_2329

I/MountService( 1368): USB DEVICE device id=152d_2329 available=false

I//usr/sbin/audiomixer( 1262): ALSA lib pcm.c:7067:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occured

.... etc repeat of previous line a number of times

D/AudioStreamOutAM( 1270): release wakelock

I/AudioStreamOutAM( 1270): PCM playback is going to standby.

E/NetlinkEvent( 1265): NetlinkEvent::FindParam(): Parameter 'INTERFACE' not found

Is there any detail on this? what runs this process.

Poweramp is fine without this

Continued from my logcat output:

some further investigation has shown that the NetLinkEvent event is launched by the vold process which I guess stands for "volume deamon". It checks if the sdcard is still there. Using root, I killed the process but it just spawns another.

In the meantime, I have given up trying to use Poweramp (although I bought the app). There appears to be no interest to get this resolved.

thanks :D

Some 3rd party players just play tracks though system media player. Those won't have issues as system media player has special HDD WakeLock on Archos HDD. We tried to use this WakeLock, but it was specifically developed by Archos in such way that prohibits WakeLock use from 3rd party apps, sorry.

Would you be able to name one or a few of the 3rd party player that just play tracks through the system media player?. I purchased Poweramp, but I'm not able to use it.

I have now tried GONEMAD and it appears to be able to cope with the NetlinkEvent. With its thread proirity and cache to high, watching the processes in Catlog show that the NetLinkEvent occurs, however, the music plays on!!!!!

Having used this app, it must be the nearest competitor to Poweramp (still unsurpassed apart from the NetlinkEvent problem).

I am interested in hearing other people's experiences. :D

Logcat output using GoneMad still showing underruns (ie the disruption) but not as bad as Poweramp. We can only hope Archos resolve this in (one of) the next firmware upgrade.
