Equalizer doesn't work until the player is toggled off/on under Known Players

As the title says, equalization for any app, even Poweamp, won't take effect until I toggle the player off and on again under 'Known Players'. Then I hear the player cut out for a split second and the equalization takes effect. Also, every time I fire up Poweramp Equalizer, it complains that the 'Audio Processing Disabled. Press here to enable'. I turn it back on and then load the player. Am I missing something in the great morass of settings?
