Did you really mean when selecting a "Playlist" (i.e., a defined list of songs, such as an M3U file)? If so, you can sort any playlist by year if you want. View the required Playlist first, then tap menu > Re-Sort > By year. If you meant just listing your whole Library using a "Year" layout, follow @flyingdutchman's advice above to ensure you have the 'Years' Category enabled.
