Exported WMAs from Windows Media Player - all are now unknown artist

I just bought a micro SD card and inserted it into a galaxy A3.

I hooked the phone up to the PC and started windows media player.

I synchronized my wma musik library with the galaxy A3 (card) using the media player sync feature.

With google play, I can access by artist, each album is assigned the right artist. Everything seems to be working (just no more covers).

So I downloaded the trial version of Poweramp. Now all my albums have "unknown artist".

I checked the wma files on the card using windows explorer - file properties. They carry the artist information.

What am I doing wrong?

It sounds like your mp3 tags are not filled in correctly. Use any mp3 editor or even Poweramp itself. Long press on albumart and edit tags. You will probably notice empty fields.

Also as .wma is a microsoft proprietory format my advice is to ditch them and convert to mp3 or flac type files. Native android media ignores .wma

Thank you for replying.

We are talking about ~1000 CDs here. Manual editing is not an option.

I followed your suggestion and indeed, within Poweramp "artist" is empty while "album artist" holds the correct information.

Is there a way to transfer the information from one field to the other automatically?

Edit: So you imply I should batch-convert those 1000 CDs from (lossless) WMA to compressed MP3. Then move those mp3 on the phone card?

(I stick with lossless WMA on the PC for sure)

You can use a batch tag editor (on your PC) to adjust various tags in as automatic manner as possible. I use TagScanner, but MP3Tag is another good one. TagScanner for example allows you to select a bunch of files (thousands if you want) and copy from one tag to another. But check first that all of the Artist tags really are empty (easiest way would be to sort the list By Artist in the batch screen to see any that are filled) as you don't want to overwrite any 'real' artist names with generic album info (such changing them all to 'Various Artists' for compilation albums).

@AG2 you can try to force Poweramp to use/display Album Artist instead of Artist via Settings / Library / Lists / Album Artist Label for Tracks (check), Album Artist Label for Albums (check).

Also you may want to select Album Artists in Library header menu / List Options (and uncheck simple Artists).

Thanks!
