No longer able to see or choose music folders for library

Recommended Posts

I just upgraded my phone.  No matter how many times I do a full rescan or restart the phone or set "ignore short tracks to", the only MUSIC FOLDER options shown now are either NTERNAL STORAGE or SD CARD.  No folders are shown and clicking anywhere on either of those two choices gives me ZERO files and folders.   What am I doing wrong?

Are you saying that you can't drill-down through the lists of items that you see in Settings > Library > Music Folders ?

Try a clean re-install of Poweramp (the latest build is 830) and see if that helps.

What device and ROM version have you upgraded to?

Damn, this is obnoxious.  I always liked Poweramp (which is why I bought it), but now it won't even admit that there are any subfolders in either the phone or the SD card.  I've done a refresh a LOT of times - I've even uninstalled - rebooted and then reinstalled the app twice.  It still gives no possibility of adding anything to the library.  So I guess I'm stuck with Player Pro - or neutron  or Black Player or one of the other programs I tried before I settled on and bought Poweramp.  Same version of Android (as far as I can tell) except for that "One UI" - but I think both phones ran Android 9.

Hell of a way to spend my vacation.....

Settings > Library > Music Folders show me "Internal Storage" and "SD Card".  There's no arrow for subdirectories and even if I choose both internal storage and SD card and click select folders, I have 0 files and 0 folders chosen after a refresh.

I went from a Galaxy S8 Plus to the new Galaxy S10 Plus.

Both reinstalls of Poweramp were to the latest version.

That's very odd. After you ticked the only available two top levels ("Internal Storage" and "SD Card") did you then try a FULL Rescan (bottom of the Settings > Library menu) or just a normal rescan? And this is on build 830 of Poweramp, and the stock S10+ ROM?

It does sound as though PA is unable to see the file system contents at all, is it an Android-level permissions issue perhaps? What happens if you try to launch an audio file from an external file explorer to play in PA, does PA play it then, and if so what does the Info/Tags display show as the file location?

OK.  I just went through that again.  The exact steps were:
1.  I selected a song in Total Commander and clicked play with PA.  I got the message "too many retries".  Probably because I tried that last night and then kept trying next track and previous track - to no avail.  So,

2.  I went back to PA settings and made sure both top level choices ("Internal Storage" and "SD Card") were ticked.

3.  Then I did a full rescan.  (That IS what I'd done before but this one took a lot longer).  When it was done I had a bunch of folders and thousands of files selected.  That makes sense since the card DOES have thousands of songs on it.  However, nothing more than the two top level choices ("Internal Storage" and "SD Card") was still available.

4.  I played songs through Total Commander again and was able to go to next track and previous track, but it WAS everything.  Including ringtones and other stuff I just didn't want to hear.  PA still showed nothing below those two top levels for library choices.

5.  I shut down PA on my phone and went into another room to answer this on a computer.  I just checked PA again.  It still shows only those two choices top level choices ticked, but it's back to showing 0 folders and 0 tracks selected.

I figured it was probably a security/permissions thing last night and looked for anything I thought might have anything to do with PA or default apps, but couldn't find a thing.

This does sound like an Android permissions thing to me, for some reason PA is finding itself unable to drill down through the directory tree. I think we'll need to get @maxmp's input on this one, as Galaxy S10+ with Pie should not be having this problem. When you uninstall and re-install, please try deleting the folder /Android/data/_com.maxmpz.audioplayer and rebooting before reinstalling, just in case anything is getting left behind.

OK.  I just uninstalled - deleted that folder - shut down - restarted and reinstalled from the play store.  Same exact thing.  Just the two top choices for the library.  It doesn't seem like the problem could be pie though, since the Galaxy S8 plus that I had was running Pie too..

Strange.  With only those two top choices available (and neither of them ticked), it's still reporting that I have 1 folder and 361 tracks available.  Which is about right for the last directory I was using as a library.

Just FWIW, I thought that the problem might be the SD card, so I tried another one and got the exact same result.  The inability of PA to "see" below the top levels of even internal storage made that a long shot anyway.

Just FWIW.

Will do.  I'll give that a try right now.  Just in case it makes any difference, I'm not installing from the apk on my phone (I don't have it.)  I'm installing from the Play Store.  Thanks

Please don't use Poweramp APK downloaded from "3rd party" sites. Hacked version won't work properly. Thanks!

@maxmp He just mentioned he is using the Play Store and not any 3rd party APKs

Funny.  I still have no sub-directories able to be seen or chose for the library, but if I use a program like Total Commander to find a file, click that file and have PA play it, if I click on the grid symbol (the one that shows All songs, Artists, Playlists, etc.) all the songs in subdirectories are visible.  I can click on an album with Total Commander and the entire album gets played.  I still can't select anything specific for the library though.  :(

Now that i see these posts, i have encountered the same on my  virtual test devices . Using v829. When Poweramp installs, the storage is unticked which is strange too as no media will be found on the initial scan.

This may happen when Trial is over (but there was no chance to show trial over dialog yet).
