  1. Since I was advised - and actually have understood for a while - that converting from one lossy format to flac does nothing to improve the quality of the audio, and that converting from flac to ogg (another lossy format) causes some degradation, I have decided on a new plan:

First, I re-downloaded all of the tracks I purchased from iTunes. Most are in the unprotected m4a format, but a couple dozen are older downloads, which were protected in m4p files. Those are the ones I originally burned to CD's, then re-ripped into flac or ogg. Perhaps if I were to purchase a newer (ie; remastered) version of some of those tracks, I would get the m4a rather than the m4p files. I have some tracks I purchased from 7Digital in mp3 format @ 360K (or is it 340K? - not important here). I was never able to distinguish the difference between a Rock & Roll track I ripped from a CD into flac and one I purchased on iTunes. My player on my Android phone has always been Poweramp (purchased ver). On my PC, I use MusicBee.

I 'sync' tracks manually. Normall, after I purchase them from iTunes I would convert to .flac and send them to the phone after applying ReplayGain.

But now, to get back on track, I am simply applying RG to the AAC (m4a) files or mp3 files I purchased, and sending them directly to the phone. For the tracks I ripped from CD's into .flac, I will continue using .ogg Vorbis. I tried using the AAC converter in Foobar2000, but there was an error. When I looked it up, I read that updating the converter files might help, but in my case it did not. Since OGG is working fine, and Poweramp will read ogg or aac.

I think that the whole reason I started using .flac - even for aac files purchased on iTunes - is that I liked to create 'DJ mixes' with many tracks in Reaper DAW. My thinking was that if I wanted create a mix-down that I would want to have all of my tracks in lossless format.
I never even considered the fact that Reaper (and any other DAW) will happily open m4p, ogg, mp3, and a slew of other compressed formats. So, when I create a mix, I can just as easily use the aac files, then render the mix-down as anything I want. I seriously doubt that I will be able to detect any difference between a mix-down rendered to aac compared to flac.

  2. I just realized that when RG is applied during conversion in Foobar2000, the change is made to the music itself, but if RG is applied after conversion - using the scan and apply functions, then RG is applied in the tag. I think this may be what is happening for me. I did allow Foobar to apply RG during conversion to ogg.

The main reason I used flac instead of aac is that much of my music library was ripped using EAC from the CD's. I wanted a compressed, yet lossless format. I realize that converting aac from iTunes to flac isn't doing anything to improve the quality; it was just a habit I got into.

I guess I'll go through my entire library, and if I have an aac file, I'll just apply RG and send it to the phone for PA. If it's a .flac file, then I guess I'll convert to aac, apply RG and send to phone.

I could make things easy on myself for now by simply replacing the ogg files on the phone with the flac files on my PC. But eventually, I may run out of storage space, since the 256GB on the Pixel 6 is all that I'm ever going to have - there is no SD card slot on this phone.

  3. Hey guys;

I had been playing all of my music (classic Rock) on my Android phone with Poweramp from .flac files which I had either ripped from my CD's or purchased on iTunes (then converted to flac from aac - I know this is silly, but...)
I applied RG to all of the flac files before uploading them to the phone (was a Galaxy A51 running Android 13). The volume level was good on all tracks.

Now, I have a new phone (Pixel 6 Android 13) and decided to convert to ogg to save time (and space) uploading to the phone.
Once again, I applied RG to the files as I converted them using Foobar2000 to .ogg level 6.
I left the default RG analyze using set to EBU R 128 and did not apply any preamp gain.

I am now noticing that many of the tracks are not at the same level; some are too soft, and some too loud.

I have checked my settings in Poweramp (3.x build 957 purchased version) and they're all the same as I had before.

I have also listened to the tracks in Foobar2000 on my Windows 11 machine, and there is a noticeable change in volume between some tracks. That said, when I load some of the flac files into Foobar, the level is good on all tracks.

I'm thinking that perhaps because I applied RG in Foobar2000 during conversion from flac to ogg, that something went wrong; or that ogg files just don't play so nice with RG as flac do.

If I cannot fix the issue, I will probably just replace the ogg files on the phone with the flac ones - I did get the 256GB version of the Pixel 6 so I have enough space.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

  4. What criteria determines when a track is added/removed from the 'recently added' list?
I have found that when a track is uploaded to the Poweramp library (on my phone), it will appear in the recently added list, but so does another track that I uploaded a couple weeks ago, and have played.
I thought that perhaps the recently added list would be cleared when more tracks are added to the library folders, but it appears that there's something else that must take place before a track is removed from the list. Would I need to remove those older tracks manually?

    Thanks for your help

  5. Wow! Thanks. My bad!

I can't believe I missed that. I guess it's because I've been playing all songs, never even going to the ... menu.

When I did go to the menu, I found that just about everything was ticked, so I un-ticked everything except recently added.

  6. Hello;

Is there a way to select recently added tracks?
I have searched through the settings, but cannot find this feature.
I would like to be able to select tracks I have added within x days to add to queue or a playlist automatically.

    Thanks for your help

  7. Hey guys;

I have spent the last hour Googling for this song in which Joe Walsh receives a collect call from Joe Vitale. The operator asks Joe something like (I don't recall the exact words) 'is this Mr. Walsh', to which he answers 'I think so', and the operator replies 'Sir, you should know something like that'.

I might have the Joe's mixed up; maybe it was Joe Vitale receiving the call from Joe Walsh, but I seem to recall it being a Joe Walsh song.

I thought it was one of these songs:

    In the City
    Life's Been Good
    Over and Over
    Rocky Mountain Way

But I have listened to all of these songs, and have not heard that phone call. I know the song Life's Been Good has the Wah Wah's at the end, but no phone call.

I own copies of only 3 Joe Walsh songs:
    Life's Been Good
    One Day at a Time
    Rocky Mountain Way

I think it's time for me to purchase 'But Seriously Folks', but I don't think any of those songs have the phone call.

Thanks for your help; this is really eating me.

  8. It's ironic how my brain is working (or not) on this issue:
I have OCD tendencies, and as such, have this thing about how my tracks are listed.
Normally, I will allow PA to select a track, using one of the shuffle modes. But a while back, I decided I wanted to play my entire library from A to Z. When I realized that there were many tracks that begin with an article (the, a, an), I became obsessed with changing that. But now, the same OCD is causing me to re-think the situation. Perhaps MotleyG has the best idea; just leave the tracks alone, and a solution will come along one day.

So now that I've gotten halfway through the process of moving the article to the end of the title and in (..), I think I may just let the titles be what they are - as released, and wait for PA to add the feature we are discussing.
If I could just get rid of the OCD, I would be a much happier camper - overall...

    Edit: And one more thought:
Simply eliminating the article from the beginning of the title may not be appropriate for some tracks:
Example: The Doors "The End". I don't think it would be appropriate to title this track "End", or "End (The)". It just doesn't sound right, and destroys the impact of the title as it was intended by the artist.

  9. Yes, a global feature would work for me.
I agree with andrewilley on the punctuation issue as well.

In the meantime, I am changing the titles of tracks that begin with an article, so that PA will sort them as desired. Pretty much work, but definitely do-able.

  10. Hello;

Is there a way to change the sort order for all songs which would result in article like 'the', and 'a' being ignored for sorting purposes?
For example: 'The House of the Rising Sun' will not be listed with songs that start with 'H', but will be listed with songs that start with 'The'.

In MusicBee on my Windows 10 PC, sort ignores the article if it is the first word of a title. I can also specify a custom sort order by setting a tag.
It does not appear that Poweramp reads this tag.

    Thanks for your help

  11. Something weird is going on with my PA app on my Galaxy A51 (Android 11) phone.

I had been playing in 'shuffle songs' mode which I turned on from the 'All Songs' category.
I wanted to find a specific song, so I went back to the 'All Songs' category expecting to find the alphabetical listing of all songs in my library.
There has always been the main list in alphabetical order with the index on the right. I would swipe down to find the first letter of the song I wanted.
But now that index was not visible, and the main listing was anything but alphabetical.
I couldn't figure out what was going on, so I went into the Apps settings and did a 'force stop', then cleared the cache and data. I then restarted PA and found the track listing and index as I would expect. Of course I needed to go to settings to restore my previous preferences.

Any idea of what I might have done to have this happen?

  12. Thanks for that info; So I'll just add the songs, then search the library to confirm that PA has scanned and added them, but I won't tap on the track to play it; wait until PA plays it through shuffle.
I thought there was an option to have PA favor new additions, but maybe I'm thinking about MusicBee - my player of choice on Windows. I couldn't find this option in PA, but in MusicBee there is an option in Auto-DJ to prefer recently added tracks.
However, I did find an option in PA; Lists > No Reshuffle - so I can play any song in the library without 'messing up' my shuffle list.

I have been using PA for at least five years on my Android phones. I have never used all the options/features it provides, but sometimes when I've got some time to kill I go through the options and discover some really great feature that I want to turn on.
When I just want to listen without a fuss, PA does that very well, as its defaults work very well for me.
My issue with shuffle seems to be more in my head than anywhere else; And then I just remembered that I am running MusicBee on my Windows box, and have it's 'Auto-DJ' turned on. So I may hear a song while listening on the PC and then hear the same song again on my phone through PA. My brain gets confused as to which device I was listening to when I heard a particular song.

Example: This morning I was listening on my PC and heard a certain song. Then I went out with my dog while listening to PA on my phone - same library as on the PC - and wouldn't you know it; the same song that I had heard only an hour ago played!
But it was not a repeat for PA. It was only a repeat in my brain. HA.

In the end, I cannot say why I get 'annoyed' by repetition when I enjoy all the music in my library. I guess it's more of a technical thing than a music thing. I just want things to work as expected - and as I now realize, PA is doing just that!

PA kind of reminds me of an amateur radio app. Hams have historically enjoyed having the ability to tweak and hack their software (and their rigs). PA is like that for music. So much you can tweak and customize.

So let me take this time to thank the developers of Poweramp and those on these forums who have been kind enough to take their time to reply to my (sometimes frivolous) queries - for providing an enjoyable listening experience.
Add to that my new HiFiMAN Deva Pro cans with Bluemini BT DAC; I really have nothing to complain about. PA is a great app and what did I pay for it? Not much when considering what it does.

Oh, and let me add my thoughts on syncing PA with MB.
I have read that it is certainly possible to sync Poweramp on Android with MusicBee on Windows. But my experiences with sync (mostly Firefox) are not very pleasant. I would have to do some more reading, then back up all of my settings before I try it between PA and MB.

  13. I just tried that today: I was around 500 deep into the shuffle list that contains about 4,000 songs when I started hitting the << button. Eventually I reached track 001 and had not found the dupe I thought I heard.
But what I did find is that I have three versions of the track: Studio, Live, and my own reverb rendition.
I guess my memory isn't as good as the PA database.

  14. Does closing PA and opening another app that uses audio channels - in my case an audiobook reader - cause the shuffle order to be reset?
If not, then what actions within PA while a shuffle list is playing would cause re-shuffle? And if re-shuffle does occur, won't the track counter return to 1/n?

If all else fails I suppose I can uninstall PA and reinstall it - after having cleared all of its data.

  15. Hey guys;

Is it just me, or does PA repeat songs while playing in 'Shuffle Songs' mode?
I normally select the All Songs category, then turn on Shuffle Songs.
Several times though, when I checked the shuffle mode, I found it to be set to Shuffle All. I don't recall whether I did a reset or what as it appears that Shuffle All is the default mode.
Does it make a difference which category I am in when I turn on shuffle - if I am using Shuffle All or Shuffle Songs.

Is it possible that PA is repeating songs during a shuffle?
I have been watching the track counter, and it does not appear that I have reset the shuffle.
I have also checked my music library for dupes, and found none.

    Am I losing it?

    Thanks for your help

  16. Well, looks like I figured it out. I guess I was in a bit of a rough mood when I posted. Very frustrating when you're not thinking rationally.
The problem was that Poweramp service was stopping a couple of seconds after I hit the pause button. This prevented the watch from reading PA status, so it could not restart the player.
I just changed the setting to keep PA service running even when app is idle. Seems to work so far.

Now an interesting question here: Why could I restart the music (after more than a minute or two) using the button on the headphones but not on the watch?
My best guess is that the headphones are not requiring the Poweramp service to work, while the watch does.

  17. Hey guys;

I'm not sure whether to post in this forum or in one of the Android forums. Here is my situation:

I have the Galaxy A51 running Android 11 on Tracfone (Verizon) service.
I have Poweramp (build 911-arm64) running on the phone.
I have a Galaxy Watch 4 Classic (latest firmware) paired to the phone.
I am listening to music from PA over JBL/UA Sport Train Wireless headphones.

Normally to start, I open PA on the phone and hit the play button. Music begins playing.
Now I want to pause the music. I can either hit the button on the headphones - when it works - or the watch face. When PA is playing music, a full face transport control will work with PA to pause or start the music.
However, after PA has been paused for a while (maybe 1 minute or longer but I haven't timed it yet) I cannot restart the music from the watch. The full-face transport control does not appear; instead there is just the main watch face with the clock and a 'play' button as one of the 'complications'. But that button does not work. When I hit it, I get the message "Couldn't perform action. Music not playing". Well, duh! I paused the music, so of course it's not playing. But the app (Poweramp) is still open and running on the phone?
What is the point in allowing me to pause the music from the watch, but not to restart it?

Is this an issue with Poweramp, or does the same thing happen regardless of which music player I use on the phone?

I have been a PA user for more than five years now, and really like the player. I don't want to give in and use the Samsung app for playing my .flac files.

This issue coupled with other issues I have with this phone and watch have me seriously considering returning at least the watch to Amazon for a full refund. But before I do that, I would like to at least try to work around this and any other issues I have with these devices.

I think you can all understand how frustrating it is when all you want to do is listen to music on your headphones but have to jump through hoops when the software decides it doesn't want to work for you. Maybe it's time to purchase a turntable and some vinyl and a tube amp and go back to listening at home using wired only headphones. Or maybe I just need to calm down and see if perhaps there is a solution to my problem.

    Thank you very much.

  18. Uh; My bad!

I just realized that I had Repeat Category selected while I was using Shuffle. I suppose this can really mess things up within a normal shuffle. Most likely the cause for hearing the same song twice in an hour, and perhaps the cause of the OP's issue with shuffle.

  19. What is the difference between Shuffle All and Shuffle Songs?
When I heard a repeat song, I had PA set to Shuffle All. I now have set to Shuffle Songs.

Now that I have the track counter, I will know if shuffle has been reset.

    Edit #2:

Sorry; I must have completely missed that you posted the link 'How to use Repeat and Shuffle in Poweramp'

  20. I was having a similar problem with shuffle:
I had artists repeat within a shuffle, and just a while ago a song played twice in the same hour of listening. I never stopped the player, but paused it a couple of times.

What I found is that I had shuffle Shuffle All selected.
    I changed to Shuffle Songs.

I have the idea that when shuffle ALL is selected, PA will shuffle songs, albums, artists, etc. Could this cause more than one song by the same artist to be played?
Perhaps the song I heard twice in an hour was first played by the artist shuffle, then by the song shuffle - with Shuffle All turned on.
I guess I'll have to listen for a while to find whether changing to Shuffle Songs fixed the problem.

BTW: Thanks for the instruction on how to get the track counter to appear. I had it switched off.
